Synopsis
Quartet has had a sell-out season in London’s West End and is a comedy that proves aging can be fun, hilarious, poignant and life affirming.
Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred live in a home for retired opera singers. They’ve more or less come to terms with their now simple and unglamorous life and keep to their motto “No Self Pity” by sticking to simple rules like never asking the questions “how are you today?” or “what are your plans for today?”.
Their yearly highlight is the celebration concert for Verdi’s birthday on the 10th of October. In the middle of preparations for this concert, a new “inmate” arrives who disrupts their equilibrium: Jean, Reggie’s ex-wife, still acts like a diva and seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Not only does her presence torment Reggie, but her refusal to revive their original quartet from Rigoletto, destroys their hopes to show off at the Verdi Gala. Behind the ensuing comical bickering lies a funamental dilemma of old age: Will Jean preserve the memory of her past untouched, or live in the present by risking exposure to ridicule?
