Matthew studied English at Cambridge University before becoming an actor and subsequently a theatre director and writer. He has taught and directed at many of the leading theatre schools in London, including The Royal Academy of Music, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

As a director Matthew’s credits include: Top Hat (Aldwych Theatre – winner of the 2012 Evening Standard Best Night Out Award), Sweet Charity (Theatre Royal, Haymarket – nominated for three Olivier Awards), Little Shop of Horrors (Duke of York’s Theatre – nominated for three Olivier Awards), The Magic Flute (British Youth Opera at The Peacock Theatre), The Last Five Years (Menier Chocolate Factory), Maria Friedman – By Special Arrangement (Donmar Warehouse), Rags (Bridewell Theatre), Closer Than Ever (Jermyn Street Theatre), Starting Here, Starting Now (Link Theatre), Mr Stink (Leicester Curve and National Tour), Carousel (Blackpool Grand and National Tour), Rent (English Theatre, Frankfurt), The Demon Headmaster (Churchill Theatre, Bromley and National Tour), Far From the Madding Crowd (Watermill Theatre, Newbury), Cabaret (English Theatre, Frankfurt), Perfect Wedding (Vienna’s English Theatre), Little Shop of Horrors (StageWest, Toronto).
Theatre adaptations include: Top Hat, Mr Stink, and Far From the Madding Crowd.

As an actor Matthew’s credits include: Ragtime (Piccadilly Theatre – Olivier nomination for Best Supporting Actor), Chicago (Adelphi Theatre), Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Shaftesbury Theatre), Les Mis’rables (Palace Theatre), Children of Eden (Prince Edward Theatre), Die Fledermaus (Arts Theatre), Cinderella (Old Vic Theatre), Awaking Beauty (Scarborough), The Glee Club (New Vic Theatre, Stoke), Passion (The Bridewell Theatre), and Company (Southwark Playhouse).

Television and film credits include: Law and Order UK (ITV), Doctor Who (BBC), Judge John Deed (BBC), and A Christmas Carol (Hallmark/CBS).

As a writer his published work includes; “Staging a Musical” (A and C Black/Bloomsbury), “Far From the Madding Crowd” (Samuel French Ltd), and “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Little Red Riding Hood”, “The Three Little Pigs”, and “The Night Before Christmas (all for A&C Black/Bloomsbury).
