SYNOPSIS
Mr Green, a cranky and cantankerous widower, lives alone in his cluttered New York apartment, surrounded by months of unread mail, decades of crumbling telephone books – and an isolation anchored only in his traditional Judaism. When young American Express executive Ross Gardiner nearly runs him over and is given a community service sentence to help the old man once a week for six months, both men’s perspectives of life drastically change. As Ross energetically sweeps the apartment clean of accumulated clutter, stocks the refrigerator with food, and replaces stockpiled paper bags with cleaning materials, the two learn to bridge the generation gap with wry humour, peel back the layers of their emotions, face their own demons, and use each other’s strengths to conquer them. What starts out as a comedy about two men who can barely tolerate being in the same room together, turns into a gripping and moving drama when their reluctant relationship slowly develops with wit, wisdom and warmth.
