Matthew studied English at Cambridge University before embarking on a career as an actor and theatre director. His recent directing credits include the current production of Little Shop of Horrors (Duke of York’s Theatre), The Last Five Years (Menier Chocolate Factory), Rent (English Theatre, Frankfurt), The Last Session (Acorn Theatre, Hackney Empire), Cabaret (English Theatre, Frankfurt), Rags (Bridewell Theatre), Carousel (Blackpool Grand Theatre and national tour), Far From the Madding Crowd (Watermill Theatre), Closer Than Ever (Jermyn Street Theatre), A Little Night Music (Chelsea Theatre), Maria Friedmann – by Special Arrangement (Donmar Warehouse), The Demon Headmaster (Churchill Theatre, Bromley and national tour) and The Dream Dealer (Bridewell Theatre). He was also Associate Director for the award-winning National Theatre production of Carousel (Imperial Theatre, Tokyo), The Pajama Game (Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto) and Jesus Christ Superstar (Lyceum Theatre, London).
Matthew is a visiting director at Mountview Theatre School, the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the London School of Musical Theatre, Arts Educational Schools, and British Youth Opera.
Forthcoming productions include The Magic Flute (Peacock Theatre) and La Cage aux Folles (Menier Chocolate Factory).
Recent publications include his theatrical adaptation of ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ (Samuel French), ‘Staging a Musical’ (A & C Black), and several musical adaptations for children including Roald Dahl’s ‘Little Red Ridinghood’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’, and an adaptation of the classic children’s poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ (all A & C Black).
As an actor Matthew’s recent West End credits include: ‘Younger Brother’ in Ragtime (Picadilly Theatre), for which he received an Olivier nomination, ‘Monsieur Reyer’ in The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), ‘Mary Sunshine’ in Chicago (Adelphi Theatre), ‘Falke’ in Die Fledermaus (Arts Theatre), ‘Gabriel’ in Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Shaftesbury Theatre), ‘Feuilly’ in Les Misérables (Palace Theatre), and ‘Seth’ in Children of Eden (Prince Edward Theatre). Other roles include ‘Phil’ in The Glee Club (New Vic Theatre), ‘Ugolin’; in Jean de Florette (The Venue), ‘Will Parker’ in Oklahoma! (Liverpool Playhouse), ‘Parsloe’ in The Card (Watermill Theatre, Newbury), ‘Scotty’ in Merrily We Roll Along (Leicester Haymarket), ‘The Scarecrow’ in The Wizard of Oz (Theatr Clwyd), and ‘Jesus’ in Jesus Christ Superstar (Civic Theatre, Chelmsford).
His television credits include The Big Battalions (Channel 4), Harry Hill, Judge John Deed and the current series of Dr Who (all for the BBC). Film includes A Christmas Carol (Hallmark).
Matthew lives in London with his wife Lindsey and two daughters Lydia and Xanthe.
