SYNOPSIS
In Jon Marans’ deeply moving and compelling play, two seemingly incompatible men use music as a common language to navigate the hidden, protective layers of their own souls. Stephen, a Jewish American concert pianist burned out at 25, comes to Vienna in search of the spark he once had. But before he can study with a world-renowned teacher, Stephen must spend a humbling semester taking singing lessons. His taskmaster is an enigmatic vocal coach, Professor Mashkan: a pianist in his fifties with a firm grasp of the Romantics and an insight into true musicianship which young Stephen lacks. Schumann’s music eventually penetrates the emotional armour protecting the teacher and student, enabling them to learn to live with the aftermath of great loss by artistically expressing it.
