Synopsis
“Charley’s Aunt” is one of the most famous British plays – a rollicking farce about undergraduates at university.
Lovesick Oxford undergraduates Jack Chesney and Charley Wykeham are desperate to meet their sweethearts Kitty and Amy and hatch a plan to invite the girls to lunch in their college rooms. The snag is that in 1890s Oxford the girls must be accompanied by a female chaperone and the girls’ strict guardian, Stephen Spettigue, takes his responsibilities very seriously. Luckily Charley’s rich aunt, who he has never met, is due to arrive at any moment on a visit from Brazil . But, alas, she doesn’t arrive in time! All is not lost, however, for fellow undergraduate Lord Fancourt Babberley is rehearsing an amateur dramatic show, and has a female outfit handyx with the hilarious results, especially when the real aunt arrives.
Brandon Thomas’s 1892 classic period farce has been a firm favourite with audiences all round the world for over a 100 years.
